what is god's name?
God revealed his name to Moses in the Bible around 1500 BC ~ about 3500 years ago:

EXODUS 3:13-15 -  Then Moses said to God, “But if I go to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors sent me,’ then
the people will ask, ‘What is his name?’ What should I tell them?” Then God said to Moses, “{Tell them,} ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ When you go to the
people of Israel, tell them, ‘I AM’ sent me to you.” God also said to Moses, “This is what you should tell the people: ‘YAHWEH is the God of
your ancestors,  the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. My name will always be YAHWEH. That is how the people will
know me for generations and generations to come.’ {Tell the people,} ‘YAHWEH has sent me to you!’”

EXODUS  6:2 – 3 - Then God said to Moses  “I AM the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. They called me El Shaddai (God All-
Powerful). They did not know my name, YAHWEH.”

The prophet Isaiah said he was still named YAHWEH when he wrote Isaiah around 680 BC, nearly a thousand years later:

ISAIAH 42:8a - “I am the Lord.  My name is YAHWEH.”

The ancient Hebrew did not include vowels.  So the name always appeared as YHWH.  It is transliterated in Hebrew as YAHWEH;
in English it is JEHOVAH.
YHWH in ancient Hebrew is at the top of this page.  Hebrew is written right to left like Arabic.

God’s name was commonly recognized in all areas of life as YHWH throughout the centuries, as attested to by many engravings unearthed by
archaeologists in the Middle East.

Such diggings at the place in Jerusalem called the “Temple Mound” by the Jews and Christians and called the “Sacred Sanctuary” by the
Muslims resulted in the discovery of a labyrinth of tunnels, arched corridors, and cisterns.  Several artifacts were found referring to

The tablet below was discovered in Jerusalem and dated the
10th century BC.  The writing is ancient Hebrew and contains the word
YHWH.  Below is an image of the stone, a transliteration of the Hebrew, and a translation of the Hebrew.  It parallels the account in the Bible, II
Kings 12:1-6, 11-17.

The intriguingly beautiful pomengranate necked vase shown below dates back to around the
8th Century BC.  Inscribed on the shoulder of
the vase is

Pictured below is a tax receipt dating around the 8th century BC which includes the word “House of YHWH”.   It measures 8 ½ centimeters.
Jon Seligman, Jerusalem regional archaeologist for the Antiquities Authority, said the find was significant.   "The layer is a closed, sealed
archaeological layer that has been undisturbed since the
8th century BC. "

This beautiful silver amulet is dated to the 7th century BC.  It was discovered in a family tomb in Jerusalem.  The name of YYWH is clearly
written in the ancient Hebrew language.   It is an extract from Numbers 6:24-26, a priestly blessing that has continued since the time of Moses.

Pictured below is what is commonly called the House of God Ostracon.  It was discovered in Arad, ancient city of southern Palestine.  It is
dated the early
6th century BC and is at the Israel Museum.  It is written in ancient Hebrew, and includes reference to the “House of YHWH”.

The “Stone Dead Sea Stone” is also called the Gabriel Stone, written in two columns.  It was discovered in the same area as the famed Dead
Sea Scrolls (see below).  It has been dated to around the late
1st Century BC and is an allegory given by Gabriel, either a man or angel.
YAHWEH is mentioned many times on this stone.  Here is an image that shows the writing in two columns and transcription.

YAHWEH’S name is found over 2200 times in the Dead Sea Scrolls which were written on either animal skins or papyri.  These scrolls have
been carbon dated to have been written between about 50 and 500 BC.  Below is a photo with the word YHWH written in the ancient Hebrew
circled on the photo.  This is of Psalm 119:45-64 dated around the
1st Century BC.  A modern type of the same thing is beside it; it never

Even though the name YHWH appears nearly 4000 times just in the Old Testament, people seldom say the actual word YHWH or Jehovah.
This is because of deep, deep respect for the name of God.  Some people will write the name, but never say it.  Some people will say the
name only in prayer.

YAHWEH’S (JEHOVAH’S) name (meaning I AM) continued to be honored in the Christian era beginning with Jesus.  Remember,
I AM means

Jesus declared that he was the I AM in John 8:58 - Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth. Before Abraham was born, I AM.”

Jesus expanded on the meaning of his name “I AM” in the following scriptures.  Notice how God and Jesus are interchangeable.

Revelation 1:5, 8, 17, 18 -
Jesus is the faithful witness. He was first among those to be raised from death. Jesus is the ruler of the kings of the
earth. Jesus is the One who loves us. And Jesus is the One who made us free from our sins with his blood (death)…. The Lord God says,
“I AM the Alpha and the Omega. I AM the One who is, who {always} was, and who is coming. I AM the All-Powerful.”

When I saw him, I fell down at his feet like a dead man. He put his right hand on me and said, “Don’t be afraid!
I AM the First and the Last. I
the One who lives. I was dead, but look: I AM alive forever and ever!

Reveation 21:5-6a -  The One that was sitting on the throne said, “Look! I AM making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this, because
these words are true and can be trusted.” The One on the throne said to me: “It is finished!
I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning
and the End

Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet, and Omega is the last letter of the Greek alphabet.  In the context of being the eternal beginning
and end of all things, it means the
first Word all the way to the last Word of God.  The New Testament of the Bible in the Gospel of John 1:1-
4,14 says
Jesus was called the Word of God.

Revelation 22:13, 16a -
I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End…. “I, Jesus, have sent my
angel to tell you these things for the churches”

Said to be around 2000 years old, archaeologists found a rare limestone priestly ritual cup in the old city of Jerusalem.  What is unusual about
it is that it contains ten lines of writing.  The writing contains the word YHWH.  It is dated the
1st century AD.

A church in Tiberius, a city on the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel, has been excavated and dated around 300-400 AD.   Three dedicatory
inscriptions written in ancient Greek are incorporated in the mosaics. In one of the inscriptions is the line: "Our Lord, protect the soul of your
servant…" [Our Lord=Jesus]   One of the mosaics is adorned with a medallion in which there is a large cross flanked by the letters
Alpha and
, one of the names of Jesus (Alpha to Omega meaning from A to Z in Greek).

Yes, God does have a name.  It is
YHWH, pronounced Yahweh in Hebrew and Jehovah in English.  He is Lord of lords and King of kings.
He is the
ALPHA and OMEGA, the Beginning and End, Eternal.  God is THE I AM.

The Moabite Stone was
discovered in Dhiban, Jordan.
This monument commemorates
the successful overthrow the
Israelite power by Moab during
the reign of King Mesha during
9th Century BC.  The
Stele explains that, for 40
years, Moab had been under
the thumb of Israel from Kings
Omri to Ahab.  Moab won its
independence.  The inscription
includes a reference to the
"House of YAHWEH."
